Research has been done on lost cats and how to found them. The most recent paper was published last November in animals journal. These studies are done as surveys of cat owners.

What are the take-home messages for us?

About 33% of cats are returned to their home within 7 days, 56% within two months, and few after that.

A physical search increased the chances of finding kitty.

75% of cats are found within a 500 m radius of their home (or point of escape).

Indoor-outdoor cats will travel farther than indoor only cats.

Cats who are highly curious are more likely to be found in another house.

Over the next bit, let’s talk about how we can use this information to help in the search for a missing cat.
